In this class, textile artist and instructor Bea Byrne will show you the basics of quilting and using a sewing machine while making an 18-inch square mini quilt or wall hanging. In this beginner class, you’ll choose your own fabrics, sew the quilt top, and learn how to use a walking foot for straight line quilting.

We’ll begin with sewing machine basics, including threading the machine, winding a bobbin, and sewing a straight stitch. You’ll learn how to use quilting rulers and rotary cutters safely and then you’ll sew your quilt top, learning how to nest your seams to reduce bulk. You’ll have the option to add appliqué for extra flair.

Bea will guide you through assembling your quilt’s layers and using safety pins to hold them in place. You’ll learn how to use a walking foot on your machine, and how to read batting instructions. Finally, you’ll use straight line quilting to finish your piece. You’ll leave with a finished piece and a working knowledge of the tools and techniques to keep up your new quilting practice!!

Supplies Needed: None. We’ll provide the fabric, batting, sewing machines, walking feet, rotary cutters, quilting rulers, and other materials needed for class. You’ll take home your finished mini quilt or wall hanging. Please do not bring your own sewing machine.
