Sashiko\, which translates to “little stabs”\, traditionally uses white cotton thread on dark blue indigo-dyed fabric. A single running stitch is used to create lovely geometric patterns that can be used to decorate fabric or reinforce ripped denim\, sewn by hand. You will learn how to properly execute this running stitch\, and transfer geometric designs onto indigo-dyed linen. Our instructor will guide you in the creation of your own sashiko design sampler. Once everyone has the technique down\, you will learn how to apply this sashiko technique to your ripped jeans in order to repair and reinforce areas where the denim has torn or frayed. \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: None! Your subject can be a person or a pet – either will work! Becca’s step-by-step method will introduce you to photo transfer and sketching techniques that are fun\, accessible\, and require NO previous fine art experience.  \n\n\n\nFirst\, you will learn how to use tracing and transfer paper to transfer your image onto sketching paper. Next\, you will learn how to use shading to add depth to your sketch. Becca will walk you through sketching facial features and offer tips for nailing the eyes\, jawbone\, and other trickier details. You’ll learn techniques for adding different colors to your people and pet sketches\, as well as tips for final finishing touches. And if your custom portrait is not complete before the end of class\, Becca will guide you on how to finish the portrait at home. Portraits will range in size based on your reference photo\, and will be no bigger than 9″ x 11″. Each student will leave with one colored pencil portrait\, a short stack of sketching paper\, and a set of colored pencils to take home! \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: You MUST bring a printed photo of your person or pet as your reference! Images must be clearly in focus\, and have a good amount of contrast between light and dark areas. If you are unsure if your photo will work\, please email us. Following that\, Bri will share some of her favorite carving methods and advice for creating unique textures and effects on clay surfaces. You’ll get a chance to experiment with these various methods before using them on your own final coffee mugs. After class\, your clay masterpieces will be glazed\, fired\, finished\, and ready for pick up at a later date. This is a perfect class to get your feet wet with ceramics before you dive into a full-blown ceramics course that involves applying multiple glazes and operating a kiln. \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: None. Today\, she continues restoring both antique and contemporary wicker. Since 2008\, Peeta has focused on constructing large scale\, intricate baskets. She is represented by Culture Object Gallery in NYC and exhibits at juried fine art shows around the Bay Area and beyond.
