In this two-hour workshop\, discover the historical and political significance of tatreez\, from its roots in pre-1948 Palestine to its role as a symbol of resistance post-Nakba. Learn the fundamentals of the fallahi stitch\, or cross stitch\, and start your own tatreez motif under Amanne’s expert guidance. Each student will leave with newfound skills\, stitching strategy insights\, and all the materials needed to continue your own tatreez projects\, connecting deeply with this rich cultural heritage. \nSupplies Needed: None. As part of this class\, you will receive one Beginner Tatreez Cross Stitch Kit from Min Amanne Designs that includes all of your necessary supplies. \nInstructor Bio: Amanne Sharif is a Bay Area-based Palestinian Tatreez artist. She has always had a deep connection to her Palestinian identity\, which was strongly reinforced by her maternal grandmother who became a refugee in 1948 when she was marched out of her village\, Al-Qubab\, in the Ramleh region. Eventually her maternal grandparents resettled in Brazil but made sure to maintain their Palestinian identity. Amanne infuses her identity into every piece\, using traditional motifs with a vibrant twist. SUMMARY:Sashiko Mending: Intro To Japanese Embroidery For Decoration And Repair
DESCRIPTION:SASHIKO-S-1200x800-01SASHIKO-S-1200x800-05SASHIKO-S-1200x800-08SASHIKO-L-1200x800-04SASHIKO-L-1200x800-06SASHIKO-L-1200x800-07SASHIKO-S-1200x800-11 \n\n \n \n \n \n\nIn our Sashiko Mending class\, you will learn about this beautiful\, ancient Japanese embroidery technique which was originally developed to strengthen quilts and kimonos\, repair holes\, and lengthen the life of textiles. Sashiko\, which translates to “little stabs”\, traditionally uses white cotton thread on dark blue indigo-dyed fabric. A single running stitch is used to create lovely geometric patterns that can be used to decorate fabric or reinforce ripped denim\, sewn by hand. You will learn how to properly execute this running stitch\, and transfer geometric designs onto indigo-dyed linen. Our instructor will guide you in the creation of your own sashiko design sampler. Once everyone has the technique down\, you will learn how to apply this sashiko technique to your ripped jeans in order to repair and reinforce areas where the denim has torn or frayed. \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: None! All fabric\, thread\, and sashiko needles are provided for you to keep. For extra credit\, we strongly encourage you to bring a pair of ripped jeans to repair! \n \nInstructor Bio: Fueled by a long time desire to avoid jeans shopping at any cost\, WorkshopSF sewing instructor and DIY Jack of All Trades Hayley learned the art of sashiko in order to keep her jeans in rotation for what some have called “too long”. She now has become addicted to sashiko mending\, and swears she owns at least one pair of jeans somewhere that lack rips or sashiko. Of course\, no one has ever seen them… Check out photos of her sashiko magic on Insta at @pretzelegant_sashiko.  \n \nThe rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy – this includes cancellation\, re-books\, gift certificates\, moving classes\, etc. For more information on canceling a class\, please read our cancellation policy. In our introduction to block printing workshop\, you will take your own graphic or pattern design\, then learn to transfer it to a Speedy Carve block to produce a linocut stamp. Next\, you will practice printing with water soluble ink and your new stamp as you print your image on a variety of surfaces\, including nice cardstock\, a Moleskine journal\, and even a cotton tote bag! Each student will make one medium block printing stamp and several prints featuring your block print designs to take home. \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: Please come to class with a design for your stamp already drawn or printed out. Make sure your image is no bigger than 4″x6″. As part of this class\, you will receive one block for your stamp\, as well as one Moleskine Cahier Cardboard Journal\, one cotton tote\, several sheets of nice\, heavy card stock and practice paper for your prints. Also\, students are encouraged to wear clothes they can get grungy since we’ll be working with block print ink. \n \nInstructor Bio: Hayley has been sewing since the tender age of three. This photographic process is also known as sun printing because the sun can be utilized as the main light source for your exposures. Cyanotype printing is unique in that it allows you to use real life objects\, stencils\, drawings\, and even photo negatives to produce beautiful Prussian blueprints on both artist paper and fabric. \n\n\n\nWe will lead you through the cyanotype print making process from start to finish\, beginning with a discussion of the specific tools and supplies involved\, as well as options for prepping your cyanotype solution\, paper\, and fabric. You will then experiment with exposures by using different objects and image negatives to produce your unique prints. Lastly\, you will learn to rinse and dry out your prints\, so they are complete and ready to show! You will leave with at least 6-8 prints\, including fabric pieces and artist print paper\, as well as instructions and know-how to re-create this process at home. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: For evening classes\, we’ll be using UV lamps rather than the sun to expose your prints. For afternoon classes and events\, we’ll use a mix of both. \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: None. We supply all ink\, paper\, and supplies to print. Please wear clothing that can take a hit of ink or two. We will have aprons for you to wear. We encourage you to bring objects from home\, such as leaves or small\, flat branches. You may bring a photo negative printed onto transparency paper. (A simple 8.5 x 11 transparency sheet works\, just make sure your image is printed black and white!) We also encourage you to bring paper or fabric (white tea towels\, cloth napkins\, blank apparel\, etc.) to try out for printing. \n \nInstructor Bio: Becca Schillinger earned her BFA in drawing and painting from CCAC here in San Francisco\, and was trained by drag queens in NYC on how to paint a fashion-week worthy face.  She is a resident DIY rockstar\, offering her talents across a number of WorkshopSF classes. \n \nThe rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy – this includes cancellation\, re-books\, gift certificates\, moving classes\, etc. For more information on canceling a class\, please read our cancellation policy. If you’re new to Jesmonite\, it’s a durable\, lightweight casting material used for everything from home decor to jewelry and sculpture. It’s similar to concrete\, plaster\, or resin\, but benefits over these materials in that it has a short curing time\, takes on bright colors with only a small amount of pigment\, and is water-based\, solvent-free\, and free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)\, making it safer to work with and no toxic fumes! And it’s a lot of fun to use! \nIn this beginner casting workshop\, you’ll learn to mix\, pour\, and customize Jesmonite to create two houseware objects of your choice\, such as trays\, coasters\, planters\, or dishes\, using professional silicone molds. You’ll explore how to incorporate pigments and terrazzo-style chips for different surface effects\, work in two pouring rounds\, and\, once your pieces have hardened\, de-mold and sand them for a finished look. We’ll also cover sourcing tips\, including where to buy Jesmonite\, molds\, pigments\, and tools. Each student will leave with two finished Jesmonite pieces\, as well as the know-how to keep making more! \nSupplies Needed: None. All tools and supplies will be provided. Make sure to wear something that you don’t mind getting a little messy in. We will also have aprons to protect your clothing. Also\, we suggest that you bring a tote or bag to carry home you items\, but that’s completely optional. \nInstructor Bio: Stella Hoffman is from the UK and currently resides in the Castro Valley. She has been working with Jesmonite for the past five years\, designing an array of small to medium-sized home goods. Drawn to its eco-friendliness and incredible potential to create vibrant and beautiful pieces\, Stella now focuses exclusively on Jesmonite as her go-to design material for her creative work. She can’t wait to share her expertise and watch you also discover the joy of creating with Jesmonite! They will quickly become your new creative obsession as you experiment with getting different houseplants\, succulents\, and even herbs into the kokedama bonsai mix!  \n\n\n\nIn this class\, you will learn how to assemble your kokedama plant and moss ball using string to bind it together. You will take a crack at constructing two kokedama moss ball projects (one small and one medium). You’ll receive instruction on proper plant care as well as recommendations on which “hard to kill” houseplants and succulents to use so that your kokedama creations are guaranteed a long and happy life! And with a great set of tools\, even first timers will walk away with the confidence to continue and experiment on their own! In this class\, you will start work on one punch needle project\, including material selection\, frame set-up\, working with stencils to create your own design\, punch needle techniques\, and options for finishing your piece! \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: None. As part of this class\, each student will receive a full punch needle kit that includes a reusable punch needle frame\, monks cloth\, yarn\, and an Oxford Punch Needle (the best out there…these are $35 retail) to take home. \n\nInstructor Bio: Becca Schillinger earned her BFA in drawing and painting from CCAC here in San Francisco\, and was trained by drag queens in NYC on how to paint a fashion-week worthy face.
