Your subject can be a person or a pet – either will work! Becca’s step-by-step method will introduce you to photo transfer and sketching techniques that are fun\, accessible\, and require NO previous fine art experience.  \n\n\n\nFirst\, you will learn how to use tracing and transfer paper to transfer your image onto sketching paper. Next\, you will learn how to use shading to add depth to your sketch. Becca will walk you through sketching facial features and offer tips for nailing the eyes\, jawbone\, and other trickier details. You’ll learn techniques for adding different colors to your people and pet sketches\, as well as tips for final finishing touches. And if your custom portrait is not complete before the end of class\, Becca will guide you on how to finish the portrait at home. Portraits will range in size based on your reference photo\, and will be no bigger than 9″ x 11″. Each student will leave with one colored pencil portrait\, a short stack of sketching paper\, and a set of colored pencils to take home! \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: You MUST bring a printed photo of your person or pet as your reference! Images must be clearly in focus\, and have a good amount of contrast between light and dark areas. If you are unsure if your photo will work\, please email us. Bringing in multiple images and options is highly recommended. Please make sure the image is not bigger than your 9x11in paper! \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: Each student needs to bring in at least one reference photo (see above). All other supplies are included. As part of this class\, you will receive one set of Prismacolor Premier Soft Core Colored Pencils and sketching paper to take home. \n \nInstructor Bio: Becca Schillinger earned her BFA in drawing and painting from CCAC here in San Francisco\, and was trained by drag queens in NYC on how to paint a fashion-week worthy face. Knitting is her zen craft practice and she skypes with her 93 year old grandmother for advice on projects constantly. Becca teaches many of our fiber art workshops in addition to knit and crochet\, such as punch needle. \n \nThe rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy – this includes cancellation\, re-books\, gift certificates\, moving classes\, etc. For more information on canceling a class\, please read our cancellation policy. Maybe you need to shorten a pair of pants with a new hem\, fix a seam that has split open\, or sew a button back on. In this beginner-friendly class\, you will learn hand sewing techniques to keep your favorite clothes ready to wear! \n\n\n\nLessons covered in this class include: \n\n\n\n\n –  Hemming jeans\, stretch fabrics\, and delicate sheers\n –  Repairing seams\n –  Sewing on buttons\n –  Simple mending techniques\n \n\n\n\nDuring class\, you will practice using a selection of different fabrics. We also encourage you to bring a few items of your own to work on if you like. Your instructor will guide you through all hemming and repair techniques but will not directly mend your selected items. That’s where you come in!! Each student will gain a working knowledge of each hemming and repair techniques\, as well as the opportunity to work on 1-2 pieces from home. \n\n\n\nPlease Note: This is a beginner-friendly class that does not require prior hand or machine sewing knowledge. However\, this would not be a replacement for one of our other Sewing 101 or Sewing Bootcamp classes\, which give a more complete introduction to using sewing machines. Also\, this class will not cover replacing / repairing zippers\, as that’s a whole ‘nother thing!! \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: All materials for practice are provided so you can try out several techniques on different types of fabric. You may bring a few pieces from home to practice on during class\, but this is not a requirement. \n\n\n\n \n \nInstructor Bio: Bea Byrne is a maker\, textile artist\, and instructor located in Oakland\, CA. Hailing originally from the UK\, Bea spent time working and teaching in both London and Tokyo before finally landing in the Bay Area. SUMMARY:Sashiko Mending: Intro To Japanese Embroidery For Decoration And Repair
DESCRIPTION:SASHIKO-S-1200x800-01SASHIKO-S-1200x800-05SASHIKO-S-1200x800-08SASHIKO-L-1200x800-04SASHIKO-L-1200x800-06SASHIKO-L-1200x800-07SASHIKO-S-1200x800-11 \n\n \n \n \n \n\nIn our Sashiko Mending class\, you will learn about this beautiful\, ancient Japanese embroidery technique which was originally developed to strengthen quilts and kimonos\, repair holes\, and lengthen the life of textiles. Sashiko\, which translates to “little stabs”\, traditionally uses white cotton thread on dark blue indigo-dyed fabric. A single running stitch is used to create lovely geometric patterns that can be used to decorate fabric or reinforce ripped denim\, sewn by hand. You will learn how to properly execute this running stitch\, and transfer geometric designs onto indigo-dyed linen. Our instructor will guide you in the creation of your own sashiko design sampler. Once everyone has the technique down\, you will learn how to apply this sashiko technique to your ripped jeans in order to repair and reinforce areas where the denim has torn or frayed. \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: None! All fabric\, thread\, and sashiko needles are provided for you to keep. For extra credit\, we strongly encourage you to bring a pair of ripped jeans to repair! \n \nInstructor Bio: Fueled by a long time desire to avoid jeans shopping at any cost\, WorkshopSF sewing instructor and DIY Jack of All Trades Hayley learned the art of sashiko in order to keep her jeans in rotation for what some have called “too long”. She now has become addicted to sashiko mending\, and swears she owns at least one pair of jeans somewhere that lack rips or sashiko. Of course\, no one has ever seen them… Check out photos of her sashiko magic on Insta at @pretzelegant_sashiko.  \n \nThe rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy – this includes cancellation\, re-books\, gift certificates\, moving classes\, etc. For more information on canceling a class\, please read our cancellation policy. SUMMARY:Kokedama: Japanese Hanging Plant & Moss Ball Gardens
DESCRIPTION:KOKEDAMA-S-1200x800-08KOKEDAMA-L-1200x800-02KOKEDAMA-S-1200x800-07KOKEDAMA-L-1200x800-05KOKEDAMA-L-1200x800-06KOKEDAMA-S-1200x800-06KOKEDAMA-L-1200x800-07 \n\n \n \n \n \n\nThis magical trend of hanging plants and string-bound Japanese moss balls is pretty hard not to crush on. For you bonsai newbies\, kokedama is a style of Japanese Bonsai where the plant’s root system is actually wrapped in sphagnum moss and string. These little (and not so little) moss ball bundles of joy are a ton of fun to design and construct. They will quickly become your new creative obsession as you experiment with getting different houseplants\, succulents\, and even herbs into the kokedama bonsai mix!  \n\n\n\nIn this class\, you will learn how to assemble your kokedama plant and moss ball using string to bind it together. You will take a crack at constructing two kokedama moss ball projects (one small and one medium). You’ll receive instruction on proper plant care as well as recommendations on which “hard to kill” houseplants and succulents to use so that your kokedama creations are guaranteed a long and happy life! You will leave with two kokedama moss balls of your making\, as well as a plant care guide and supplies list so that you can keep adding on to your hanging kokedama plants at home! \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: None. We will supply all plants\, string\, moss\, and other materials for your kokedama projects. \n \nThe rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy – this includes cancellation\, re-books\, gift certificates\, moving classes\, etc. For more information on canceling a class\, please read our cancellation policy. All classes are 21+. If any questions\, please email us at info AT workshopsf DOT org. \n \nALL CLASSES TAKE PLACE AT WORKSHOP SF LOCATED AT 1310 HAIGHT STREET UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED ON THE TITLE AND LISTING.

If you’re new to Jesmonite\, it’s a durable\, lightweight casting material used for everything from home decor to jewelry and sculpture. It’s similar to concrete\, plaster\, or resin\, but benefits over these materials in that it has a short curing time\, takes on bright colors with only a small amount of pigment\, and is water-based\, solvent-free\, and free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)\, making it safer to work with and no toxic fumes! And it’s a lot of fun to use! \nIn this beginner casting workshop\, you’ll learn to mix\, pour\, and customize Jesmonite to create two houseware objects of your choice\, such as trays\, coasters\, planters\, or dishes\, using professional silicone molds. You’ll explore how to incorporate pigments and terrazzo-style chips for different surface effects\, work in two pouring rounds\, and\, once your pieces have hardened\, de-mold and sand them for a finished look. We’ll also cover sourcing tips\, including where to buy Jesmonite\, molds\, pigments\, and tools. Each student will leave with two finished Jesmonite pieces\, as well as the know-how to keep making more! \nSupplies Needed: None. All tools and supplies will be provided. Make sure to wear something that you don’t mind getting a little messy in. We will also have aprons to protect your clothing. Also\, we suggest that you bring a tote or bag to carry home you items\, but that’s completely optional. \nInstructor Bio: Stella Hoffman is from the UK and currently resides in the Castro Valley. She has been working with Jesmonite for the past five years\, designing an array of small to medium-sized home goods. Drawn to its eco-friendliness and incredible potential to create vibrant and beautiful pieces\, Stella now focuses exclusively on Jesmonite as her go-to design material for her creative work. She can’t wait to share her expertise and watch you also discover the joy of creating with Jesmonite! This photographic process is also known as sun printing because the sun can be utilized as the main light source for your exposures. Cyanotype printing is unique in that it allows you to use real life objects\, stencils\, drawings\, and even photo negatives to produce beautiful Prussian blueprints on both artist paper and fabric. \n\n\n\nWe will lead you through the cyanotype print making process from start to finish\, beginning with a discussion of the specific tools and supplies involved\, as well as options for prepping your cyanotype solution\, paper\, and fabric. You will then experiment with exposures by using different objects and image negatives to produce your unique prints. Lastly\, you will learn to rinse and dry out your prints\, so they are complete and ready to show! You will leave with at least 6-8 prints\, including fabric pieces and artist print paper\, as well as instructions and know-how to re-create this process at home. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: For evening classes\, we’ll be using UV lamps rather than the sun to expose your prints. For afternoon classes and events\, we’ll use a mix of both. \n\n\n\nSupplies Needed: None. We supply all ink\, paper\, and supplies to print. Please wear clothing that can take a hit of ink or two. We will have aprons for you to wear. We encourage you to bring objects from home\, such as leaves or small\, flat branches. You may bring a photo negative printed onto transparency paper. (A simple 8.5 x 11 transparency sheet works\, just make sure your image is printed black and white!) We also encourage you to bring paper or fabric (white tea towels\, cloth napkins\, blank apparel\, etc.) to try out for printing. \n \nInstructor Bio: Becca Schillinger earned her BFA in drawing and painting from CCAC here in San Francisco\, and was trained by drag queens in NYC on how to paint a fashion-week worthy face.  She is a resident DIY rockstar\, offering her talents across a number of WorkshopSF classes. \n \nThe rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy – this includes cancellation\, re-books\, gift certificates\, moving classes\, etc. For more information on canceling a class\, please read our cancellation policy.
